Thankful For Great Characters

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I thought we’d put a bookish spin on things and talk about characters we’re thankful we've met. One character I’ve loved since I was a little is Pippi Longstocking. She’s creative. She always has a story to tell. She’s much stronger than she looks. Annnnnnnnnnnnd she has a pet monkey. Ha!

So how about you? Is there a character you’ve read about recently or one from your past that inspired you? Share about him/her in the comment section. On Thanksgiving, I’ll draw one sharer's name to win a $10 Barnes & Noble gift card. This contest is only open to U.S. residents. Be sure I have your email address, Twitter handle, or some way to contact you in case your name is picked. Good luck, and thanks for sharing!

  1. I'm thankful I've "met" the main character in your book. And no, I am not kissing up. I am honestly so excited about your novel that I can hardly stand it! YAY MAZIE!!!!

  2. Oh wow. There are SO MANY! LOL.

But, your mention of Pippi Longstocking made me think of MY favorite Astrid Lindgren character, Ronia from Ronia the Robber's Daughter. She's spunky and sassy and does her own thing. I LOVE HER (and that book).

    Super fun contest!

  3. Donna-- Thank you so much! I've enjoyed getting to know your characters too, from your very frank Frank to Eliza--the star of your free-verse YA. :)

  4. Larissa-- Thanks for sharing! I haven't read that book and will have to check it out. She sounds like my kind of gal! :)

  5. Laura,
Curious George comes to mind. We had about a 4' stuffed version of him when our children were small. He went everywhere with us. I liked Ferdinand the Bull when I was a child, but I never had a huge stuffed one. ;)

  7. Ooh, this is fun! One of my favorites I'm glad I "met" is Parker Fadley in Courtney Summers' CRACKED UP TO BE. She was a great lesson in having a character who should've been totally despicable and yet I couldn't get enough of her. Definitely convinced me "likability" wasn't the be-all and end-all of a main character!

  8. Anne from Anne of Green Gables has been a favorite since I read the entire series (multiple times) growing up. Her humor, love of life and learning has stuck with me all this time.

  9. Yep, another Anne of Green Gables fan here. She taught me that anything is bearable as long as there is scope for imagination in it. :-)
